Gill, Eric

Gill was the son of a Methodist minister who subsequently was ordained in the Church of England. He himself, at the age of thirty-one, was received into the Roman Catholic Church and took vows as a Dominican Tertiary. He was well known as a sculptor, letterist and wood-engraver and his art was intended as an expression of his Christianity. His works included the Stations of the Cross in Westminster Cathedral and a bas-relief of the Creation of Adam for the League of Nations Hall in Geneva. A committed pacifist, he was also a writer on social issues and a prolific illustrator. He formed his own family into a quasireligious community and his private life, particularly with regard to his relationship with his daughters, was decidedly unconventional.
